Some
may breathe easier because of engine replacement.
Some Kauaians, especially
those working for Niu Construction, may be breathing a bit easier
after an older, diesel-powered piece of construction equipment is
refitted to burn cleaner and with less pollution. U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency leaders have awarded a $135,000 federal grant to
officials with the American Lung Association of Hawaii as part of
a nationwide project to renovate old, diesel-driven vehicles with
newer, cleaner engines, to lessen air pollution on Kaua'i and O'ahu.

EPA
grant pays for new diesel engines
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded $135,000 grant
to the American Lung Association of Hawaii to replace five pieces
of diesel construction equipment with low-pollution engines.
On top of this grant, Grace Pacific will pitch in with $592,200
and the lung association $1,291. The money will go toward
replacing engines in off-highway trucks, a one-wheeled loader
and generators owned by Grace Pacific on Oahu and Kauai. This
would reduce the company's diesel use by 12 percent and air emissions
by 50 percent.
