Advanced Locomotive Emission Control System

Location: California: Roseville Rail Yard, Roseville

EPA provided a $39,000 grant to the Placer County Air Pollution Control District, with over $1 million in leveraging by other Collaborative partners for an innovative project that utilized conventional stationary source emission control equipment to treat emissions from locomotives in the service area of the Roseville rail yard. The emissions were captured by placing a bonnet over the exhaust stacks of the locomotives while they are being serviced. This project demonstrated the ability of such a system to achieve, on average, annual emissions reductions of nitrogen oxides by 62 tons, and particulate matter by 2 tons.
