FY 2006 Diesel Budget
The FY 2006 President’s Budget provided $15.0 million for
the Clean Diesel Initiative. EPA and a coalition of clean diesel interests
will work together to expand the retrofitting of diesel engines into
new sectors by adopting a risk-based strategy, targeting key places
and working with specific use sectors to identify opportunities to
accelerate the adoption of cleaner technologies. Through regional
efforts like the West Coast Collaborative, the Initiative will support
diesel engine retrofits, rebuilds, and replacements, anti-idling measures,
clean fuel infrastructure projects, and other activities to achieve
more immediate air quality improvements.
President Bush signed Department of Interior, Environment, and Related
Agencies Appropriations Act of 2006 (H.R.
2361), on August 2, 2005. With regards to the specific voluntary
diesel emissions reduction programs, EPA’s budget includes the following for the
FY 2006 budget:
- $5 million for the National Clean Diesel Campaign. The West Coast Collaborative
is the national pilot for this program. As part of this
campaign, EPA expects to issue a $4 million West Coast Collaborative RFP
to be announced in December 2005.
- $3 million for Community Action for a Renewed Environment
(CARE); and
- $7 million for the Clean School Bus USA program for cost-share
grants for retrofit and replacement projects.
Here is a letter
initiated by Congressmen Ken Calvert (R-CA) and Dennis Cardoza
(D-CA) signed by 16 Members of Congress in support of full
funding for these important EPA programs.
